Splitting
Causes
- Can be the result of natural aging
- Condition is aggravated by water infiltration in wood, cement tile or fiber-reinforced
cement (FRC) shakes.
- Can result from stress on the shake
- Excessive foot traffic on roof
- Problem is compounded in damp climates and in areas with repeated freezing and thawing.
Recommendations
- Cut out and replace damaged shakes be sure to check exposed underlayment for damage before replacing the shake
- Caulk smaller cracks
